What a great experience it was to hear Dyberg 4 perform their Sun Ra tribute at 5e. Such a friendly, abstract exuberance, Joy de vivre and artistic surplus. They took it way out and made us feel good at the same time… just like Sun Ra did – Kresten Osgood
Dyberg 4 mixes soulful melodies with quirky rhythms. The expression is poetic yet with an edge. The quartet explores frequencies, overtones and expressive solos. The band is a fusion between the drummer Knut Nesheim and the two longstanding duos Kovacs & Dyberg and Christian Balvig/Mia Dyberg.
Throughout her musical career the berlin-based saxophonist Mia Dyberg has had a great fascination for the spirit of Sun Ra: the sound of joy, the repetitive swinging grooves and captivating singable melodies – and Dyberg 4 becomes Dyberg 4 Ra!
The hypnotizing Sun Ra collective was seeking to transcend the performer and to entrance the listener to another state of mind with the intention of bringing love and compassion to the human race, which according to Sun Ra, is out of tune with the universe.
The quartet mixes Mia Dyberg’s joyful and energy-creating compositions with free improvisation.
The concert at Umeå Jazz Festival was the last on their Scandinavian Autumn tour 2016. A digital live album from their recent tour in Scandinavia will be online soon!

About the musicians:
Mia Dyberg, DK/SE (alto sax, composition) unique melodic expression emerges from wild sound experiments combined with Scandinavian melancholy.
Kamilla Kovacs, DK/HU (vocal) explores the different sounds and facets of the human voice. She is one of the singers in the award-winning vocal band IKI.
Knut Nesheim, NO (drums) is working in the fields of jazz, improvisation, folk music and everything in between.
Christian Balvig, DK (piano) music is organic, poetic and personal and he is an expressive improviser.
